What to Wear

Dressing properly for the weather can make outside way more fun! Below is a sample of what my own children wear seasonally for outdoor play. You don't always need to spend a lot: most of these items are second-hand. We also have a limited amount of extra outside gear for loan if cost is a barrier.  If you have questions about what to wear or where to buy it, send us a message!

You can also check out this great guide to dressing for the weather from Get Outside and Play.

Layer 3 - Outer layer

Sun hat, closed toe shoes, and sunscreen. Pack your rain gear and a sweater just in case!

Spring/Fall

Cool weather

Cool weather days in spring and fall are often wet, so a waterproof outer layer and extra mittens are key!

Layer 1 - Base layer

A warm, tight-fitting layer that can wick moisture. Look for wool or polyester, and avoid cotton!

Layer 2 - Mid layer

A warm and cozy layer made of fleece or wool. Fleece pajamas can do this job too!

Layer 3 - Outer layer

Waterproof pants and jacket, or a waterproof one-piece. A light toque, two pairs of mittens and rubber boots with warm socks or insulated Bogs.

Winter

Warm layers are key to winter fun! On those really cold and windy days adding hand and foot warmers make a huge difference. For the youngest children, look for mittens that have a pocket for handwarmers so they aren't directly on the skin as they do get hot. Packing a handkerchief or tissues and a warm drink (even warm water!) are helpful too.

Insulating and protecting layer that should be waterproof and big enough to fit over your other layers. Waterproof mittens are important, and a neck warmer is a safer choice than a scarf.
